My father was buried on New Year's Eve. He was a war veteran, former volunteer fire chief, and volunteer forest fire warden. so, an eagle was placed at each corner of his casket. After the service, a fellow fireman told our family that he and his wife saw a golden eagle cirle overhead, above the funeral home. I had to come to your site to see this majestic bird.
Thank you for your site.

I found your site while looking for information on golden eagles. I enjoyed the photo gallery. My children and I had a powerful encounter with two golden eagles in the Feather River Canyon located on highway 70 outside of Quincy, CA.
We spotted one in flight and as we went around a bend in the road another was just standing by the side of the road. It decided to take flight right into our path. I slowed down just a bit, the roads were snowy, wet and icy. The beautiful eagle bounced off the hood of our car and spread its wings out across the windshield and flew away. My son who was sitting in the pasenger's seat calmed me by letting me know the the eagle appeared unharmed and was flying away. I was relieved that everyone in the car was OK, we didn't go off the road (we were way up the canyon approaching a 35 mile turn with a very steep embankment on our left which goes straight down to the Feather River), and I'm glad the eagle wasn't hurt. My kids and I will always remember that moment. I have spotted more bald eagles in my lifetime and they are wonderful! The golden eagles are truly magnificent birds!

Thanks for the helpful pictures. I think I have an immature bald eagle visiting our neighborhood and was seeking photos to support the id. The bird has a prominent yellow hooked bill, a gull-like call. Generally perches on top of very tall evergreens and when climbing foils continues to call. Has a redish or light brown back side, light head and underside, though not a white tail, also displays a dark spot toward the tip of each wing end. Wings slightly finger. Any ideas?

Hi Folks!
Having been a "bird man" for 30+ years (Racing pigeons, Cockatiels, and Cockatoos), I've always wanted to get into falconry. Can anyone help with "details" on 'licenses', etc?
When I was a 'kid'(1960's?), I read a book, something like "The Snow Falcon", "The White Gyrfalcon", or something similar. Can't find it now. Anyway, I understand the 'commitment'to 'birds', and now want to find out more.
(By the way, when I was a kid, people knew me as 'the bird kid', and would bring every 'orphaned' bird that they found to my door, for nuturing to 'maturity').
Thanks for any info!

Hi~ One of my friend lived in Taiwan had an eagle. When he find the eagle there are many wound on the eagle and the wings and the claws were cut. The eagle was also a little bite mental disorder. My friend did not get the eagle in proper way~ He threads the master of the eagle, if the master wouldn't give him the eagle~ he will call the police to arrest him for torture the eagle. My friend didn't understand English, so I am helping to translate. He knows how to train a dog or other animals, but he didn't know how to train an eagle. My friend would like to get help from everybody that wants to help. If anyone is interesting about helping him, please e-mail me. Thank you.

Thankyou for the wounderful photos. I can appreciate the beauty and power of those beaks and talons first hand. As a animal keeper at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, I feel priviliged to have access to so many of these extrordinary birds, I only wish that the circumstances were better at times. I could share some of my own experiences with the B.O.P. at the Sanctuary, but I'm actually writing to ask you for more information regarding "Hawkseye Studio". I have currently completed my second carousel horse carving and I was just wondering where Hawkseye Studio gets there supply of glass eyes for their restorations. I love your journal! I've been looking around trying to see just how tough falconry is. You show, wonderfully, how important it is to have the time and the space to be a falconer. I've just been reading up on it for about two months. With school- time is not flexible. I'm seriously considering becoming a falconer but sadly there's no one in the dallas/ft.worth area who could sponser me :( Ah well, I really love your site and your redtail - they're my favorite!!!:) I'll be back to see your journal again so keep updating it! Dear Sir
I'm a Hill-Billy from Boise Idaho and have been an avid Raptor Watcher sense before the movie My Side of the Mountain. Recently my youngest son mentioned he would like to learn how to be a Falconer. We once found a young hawk that had indulged in the act of mating a little too long, this reflection due to the neighbor telling us she had the same day called animal control to retrieve one walking down our street early that day. Ours went to the Way Side Animal shelter here in L.A. area. Do you know of any Mentors in our area I could contact?

The reason for my inquiry, believe it or not, a friend of mine in virginia, near the potomac river has discovered a large bird nesting at the top of one of his trees. by all indications, binoculars/field guide etc, its a golden eagle. this will be confirmed/or not this weekend by proper dept of natural resources/audobon. etc... if so, it would be the first known, at least in recent history for the state of va... i'll keep u posted if interested.

Thanks so much for the great photos...My son is finishing up with a special 4th grade "BIRD" project. He chose his favorite bird, the Red-tailed Hawk! He has to create a model bird, build a nest and write a report. Alot for a 9 year old. But we have learned so much. Thanks for a great site. Sincerely

I recently read about falconry in a hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations book. this sparked an interest in me and I've been looking things up on the internet every since. Which brought me to your website. I enjoyed the stories, and hope that soon I can begin the same kind of adventures that you have been on. For know I will keep studying up on raptors and prepare for the falconry exam.

Just wanted to let you know that your site made my day.
As a graphic artist in the US Army (who is looking for new eagle photos), I ran into your site. What made my day is that I was raised in Walnut Creek and have been to the museium many times in my youth. The memories of my childhood came as great relief as I now prepare for war (I understand if that angers you).
Just wanted to say thanks for your site.

I was killing time a work and decided to search on falconry. My brother is Doug Pineo. He and I used to hawk when we were both at home as youngsters. He is still at it. I gave up the responsibility. Falconry is Doug's life before all else.
I enjoyed reading your accounts of the first year. Brought back good and bad memories. I have a problem in that I am a consultant an move around the north east for work. I also developed a dislike for the necessary bloody part of the sport. Doug stayed used to it.
I emphathised with your feelings when your bird's leg broke. I had many types of animals when I was young and there were casaulties. I cried alot.
Good luck.
Keep him flying.

She is the best thing that ever happend to me( but don't tel that to my girlfriend she might be jaelous) but i just want to say falconery is a way of live so stick with it, it is become my passion and i think it wil be yours to. We saw a beautiful bird in our yard today and do no know what it is. I have not found a photo on you site like it. It was either a hawk or falcon -- medium size, solid light gray in color fading to almost silver for the head and chest, with tan/golden legs. We are located on the east side of the santa clara valley so I'm sure the bird lived up in the nearby hills. I'd love to know what kind of bird it was and by the way I do love your website too.

This afternoon I watched a bird of prey swoop from the sky and snatch a small snake out of a creek that runs through the back of my yard. Had no idea what it was, but remember its look vividly. Searched the web, and found its picture on your site. It was a golden eagle. AWESOME!

Wonderful website! Thanks! I believe I saw a Golden Eagle devastate a pigeon in my front yard today. Your photos confirmed it but this bird had a huge tail with grey and brown horizontal stripes. I never would have believed a Golden Eagle in Portland, Maine but the Audubon society says that one was recently spotted here. My heavens!

enjoyed pics! tried to use them to identify a hawk that is coming to feed on dead grackles in my yard. white stripe over yellow eyes, approx 2 to 2 1/2' wing span, buff/yellow breast and stomach. some brown verticle stripes on neck and behind head and on shoulder. huge white spot on rump. brown two tone banded tail. been watching it last couple of days (January in Tx.), feeds on the ground, has not flown off with the grackle unless spooked. smaller than a red tailed hawk, none of my bird books give good descriptions/photos of any immature hawks and since it doesn't match any pictures of mature hawks I'm stumped! sure enjoy watching it and wish I had a zoom lense so I could get a decent picture of it. Have also spotted a marsh hawk come in and fly off with one of the dead grackles.

I very much enjoyed your field journal. I am looking forward to going after a redtail next August. We have some incredible snowshoe hair populations and can hunt them in the city limits. There are endless places to hunt within minutes in any directions. Reading of your first couple of years definitely set a person up for what may or may not happen. Either way one goes into the field knowing that it could take a while to catch the first bird and anything could happen to it at any time while hunting with it. Hope things are going well for you and once again thanks for the reading.

I greatly enjoyed reading about your early flights with your bird. I have been interested in Falconry for about a year and a half now. I have been lucky enough to work with raptors at the Northern Ca. Renniassance Pleasure Faire and some at the small faires around the state. I am waiting to get my licence because of geographic and monitary constraints. But I am a member of the CHC and hope to talk with you at some of the meets. (If you are also a member)

Many thanks for keeping those beauties public.
I recently had a unique adventure:
During a short trip by car I suddenly had to break hard due to a large bird crossing my way. It was a falcon hunting a "Spatz" a timy little bird. I do not have the English name for it. In a few miliseconds I captured that event and burned it into my brain: the Spatz escaped by passing one of the wholes - wings closed - of a wire grid fence and the falcon had to emergency break but still dropped a ittle against the fence.
It was so fantastic and unique, that I would like to paint it in oil. So, you see now I am searching for photos showing the attack of a falcon to merge it with the situation.
Well, I was not really successful jet. Any ideas where I can find some?
Best regards, Helmut

Nice pages Charlie. The trapping stories ring a bell. WE
once became frustrated at a immature red tail that wouldn't
hit a store bought white mouse, that we went to a pharmacy,
got some brown "Lady Clairol" and dyed the mouse right there. A rethrow resulted in success.!!!

Charlie....You are a credit to the sport. I've followed
your page for a while and certainly seen your name with the
CHC web page (I know you put in a lot of time with that).
I'm a CHC affiliate member. Falcony has facinated me since
I was a teen in the early 70's. One day I'll take the plunge.
I have a fair amount of equipment already but still need to
build a mews, take the test, get the license, etc. Stories
like yours and sites like this one keep the fire burning
for me. When the time comes I'll have to balance it with
family responsibilties (four kids, little league, soccer,
all the good dad stuff.) In the meantime, keep up the good
work! Thanks, Steve. P.S. How's it going with Modoc (sp?)

Thank you so much for sharing your journal, I enjoyed reading it very much, and very nicely done. At this time I am in the starting stages of my apprentiship, unfortunately finding a sponsor in my area of the country is proving to be a bit of a chore. Raptors, and Accipters have been observed as being the enemy by many, which has resulted in the illegal practice extermination (really quite sad). Any how Im rambling here, again thank you so very I enjoyed it alot.

I'd like to contact Charlie Kaiser. I am doing some artwork for a CD cover. It will feature a montage of images related to the pieces on the CD. One of the pieces was inspired by a hawk in flight. I was wondering if he has any images of hawks in flight and if possible, could I use one as part of this montage. It would not be 'featured, but part of an overall montage of images. My budget doesn't allow for the purchase of photography, but I would give him photo credit and a copy of the finished CD if he wish. Please contact him for me or forward me a location I can contact him. I don't have much time, it is October 11th, and I need to complete this by the end of the month. Thanks

Great site! I especially enjoyed the stories of Kiera's adventures. I've had a few rare opportunities to accompany some of the falconers we work with on their hunts, and it's truly exhilirating. The only birds I've "flown" personally have been a couple of bald eagles that we rehabbed (I've had the joy of "tossing" three of the 200+ we've released so far). A far cry from the discipline of falconry however - one major difference is that our hope is always that the bird won't come back! :) Was just wondering if you'd consider adding my site to your links. Although we mainly do rehab work in the Southeastern U.S., we also provide a permanent home for those raptors whose injuries prevent them from flying free. I set up a page for them using my AOL account at "http://members.aol.com/adoptabird". Please drop by the site for a visit and thanks again for a great raptor page! :)

We have a bird of prey roosting at night outside of our

noise did not bother him/her. I know my red tails, this

I'm trying to locate a photo or drawing of a falcon in flight
for a non-profit organization to use to identify its leadership
team, the Millenium Falcons, for the October 1, 1999 through
September 30, 2000 period. The group is the leadership team for
the Capital District of Kiwanis International, the worlds largest
service organization dedicated to children. The photo or drawing
would not be used as a profit making tool, just for pins and a logo
to bring the 65 volunteer leaders (Deleware, DC, Maryland, Virginia)
together for the year. (Past teams have been the Adams' Family,
Powers' Rangers, and a future team may be Tyner's Tigers)
If you can help, please contact me at this e-mail address or at

Sam Barker &ail me all the information that you can find on the topic of me personnally getting my Falconing License. I am 15 years old and loves birds. I have come accross many wounded birds that i could not leagely hold and take care and eventually release back to the wild. I have heard that it takes 7 years so i had better get started now. I also hear that you need and apprentice in doing this which i am pretty sure that i can come accross. I work at two all bird pet stores and The Pittsburgh National Aviary as well. Actually i am volunteers at these places. Thank you for your time and i hope that you can help me out.

Interesting stuff! You must like to write. Im pretty new to all this.

I like your hawk pictures. You know my favorite bird is the Red Tailed Hawk. But I also like all types of raptors beause they're such kewl brids. I'm still tring to get a good photo of a red tailed hawk with my zoom camera but when I spot them they're are too far for my camera to get a good shot. I also enjoy the pictures of your Kestrel With its young that looks neat. I also like seeing Hawks along highways because highways are one of my intrests and I guess they're intrested to but in a differnt way. I Like it when they get close to the road where you can see them closly. I wonder if theres anyway I can get a closer picture of a Red Tailed Hawk. Can you give me some tips?

Love your Photos of Raptor birds. Your one of the Osprey makes a good model in coloring for the one I'm trying to paint.
We collect bird scutptures. Figurines. They have to look exzctly like the birds we've seen, and we take care of a large park with a lake outside our back door. So we've seen
and cared for quite a few different types of birds.
I can't find certain figurines like Osprey, Commorants, Red Tails. So I do my own. So your photos are a big help on the exact coloring and markings on the birds. I wanted to say thankyou and let you know.

Outstanding collection of raptor photos!
My website features my Dad's high speed flash photos of birds in flight. He has few raptors: Screech Owl, Kestrel.
Bold assertion: his Kestrel photos are the sharpest you'll see anywhere on the web of a flying raptor.
He also has some non-flash photos of some osprey.
There are also many other great photos of "food" species. (Hummingbirds, Cardinal, Chickadee, Sparrow, etc. etc.)

Just a quick note to say how much I have enjoyed your excellent account of your first season with your Red Tail. I hope that you will be continuing to add to this in the autumn. I am also new to falconry and I will be training my first bird, a female h
arris hawk eyass, this coming season. Your tales certainly encourage a sense of enthusiasm as well as persistence in the face of some less than favourable events. I hope that I too will have the feeling of achievement that comes with this facinating sport
before the end of the next season. Perhaps I'll keep you informed?

years. Don't get discouraged with injuries, just learn from them and all will be okay. Good hawking. Tony

Hello,
enjoyed reading about your first few attempts with your red-tail. I am curious how you caught it (was it a passage?)and how long it was before you unleashed the jesses for the first time.
I had a red tail and a couple of Swainson's (illegally) when I was a teenager, now want to get into it legally and seriously. I am doing a PhD at USU after which time I will return to Alberta. Hopefully
I will be able to get me a merlin (lots of sparrows and starlings where I'm at) but may end up with a red tail. Any bits of advice on capture and training?
Appreciated your info. and stories.

I've enjoyed birds of prey as long as life itself. especially the stories of the hunt . I was fortunate enough to have studied these birds and to have raised some buteos with a scientific collectors permit. however i never had a falconers license. ba

asked that I send you a book or two with our compliments and with, hopefully, a review of same. We publish both Frank Beebe's Compleat Falconer and his A Falconers Manual ( which will be out in a new edition this spring, complete with added colour plates
and at the same price as the older edition ). Furthermore, we have
Fascination with Falcons, Game Breeders Handbook, Hawking Ground Quarry, Hawking/Golden Eagles and Hunting Falcon.
Perhaps you can let us know which of these you would prefer or don't have and we'll send it along. Please also forward your snail mail address.

that some of the words were hard to read because of the back-

Thanks,Charlie. I really enjoyed seeing your pix so much, and they loaded quickly, too.
I am always looking for good images of raptors. Thanks for sharing your collection.
I especially loved that one of the leuc. Red Tailed Hawk. What a magnificent bird! I am fortunate
enough to live near an area where I can go to see literally dozens of hawks any day, but they never pose for my pictures...
Keep up the great work!

This is our first attempt at this site. We have spotted
many different hawks & falcons in our neighborhood which is next to a forty acre lake(man made)and today we saw what we think is an osprey: very long wing span, white below and dark brown above. The bird was fishing. Could it have been an eagle? Thanks
